In June 2021, we completed the design and construction of a bespoke studio outbuilding for a private client residing in a terraced house in South West London. The client, having observed our work on a neighbouring semi-detached property, approached us with their vision for an outbuilding that would serve as a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to their garden space.β
Key Aspects of the Renovation:
- Client Engagement and Design Development: The project commenced with detailed consultations to understand the client’s requirements and preferences. We developed a design that harmoniously integrated with the existing property while optimising the available garden space.β
- Permitted Development Compliance: The outbuilding was designed and constructed under permitted development rights, eliminating the need for full planning permission. Key considerations included:β
Location: Positioned to the rear of the property, ensuring it was not forward of the principal elevation of the original house. β
Height Restrictions: The building was designed with a maximum height of 2.5 metres at the eaves, complying with regulations for structures within 2 metres of the property boundary.
Site Coverage: Ensured that the outbuilding, combined with other extensions, did not exceed 50% of the total area surrounding the original house. β - Construction and Materials: High-quality materials were selected to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal. The construction process was meticulously managed to minimise disruption to the client’s daily life and to adhere to the agreed timeline.β
- Functionality and Aesthetics: The studio outbuilding was designed to serve multiple functions, providing a versatile space that could be used as a home office, creative studio, or relaxation area. Large windows and appropriate insulation were incorporated to create a comfortable environment year-round.β
